What are Executive Function Skills?
Executive Function Skills (EFS) are high level cognitive functions that allow us to plan organize, attend, and persist in achieving a goal. EFS also include behaving in a way that helps us modify our actions in order to accomplish our goals.

Why Think Smart Coaching?
Think Smart Coaching enhances mastery of Executive Function Skills. Unlike tutors, Think Smart Coaching does not teach content, but takes a holistic view of your child and builds the underdeveloped skills necessary to manage time, information, and material. Think Smart Coaching also addresses the challenging behaviors that are a result of lagging skills.

What is Think Smart Coaching’s philosophy?
Think Smart Coaching understands that children and young adults do well if they could.  They are not lazy, unmotivated or trying to make life difficult.  The cause of low achievement, sometimes accompanied by challenging behaviors, may be lagging EFS skills that parents and teachers are unfamiliar or unsure how to successfully address.

Think Smart Coaching empathetically and collaboratively engages the parent and child so the child becomes an active and willing participant in change.

What areas does Think Smart Coaching address?
Think Smart Coaching addresses the underdeveloped EFS that are needed to manage the academic and interpersonal aspects of school.  This may include planning, organization, time management, memory, metacognition, task initiation, flexibility in thinking, goal related persistence and managing emotions. In addition, stress reduction, exam mental blocks, studying techniques, challenging behaviors as a response to lagging skills, and negative self talk are addressed.

How do I know if my child needs Think Smart Coaching?
Take the quiz to see if your child would benefit from EFS coaching.

Does Think Smart Coaching help students with High Functioning Autism, ADD or students with other learning disabilities?
These students are prime candidates for Think Smart Coaching.  With an understanding of the emotional and academic impact of social and learning issues, a variety of possible interventions and a collaborative approach, great strides can be made.

Does Think Smart Coaching work with college students?
Absolutely.  College students who recognize the need for different strategies to improve their EFS are prime candidates for Think Smart Coaching.

What do experts say about strengthening Executive Function Skills?
Lynn Meltzer, author of “Executive Function in Education”, states “we need to teach executive function strategies so children can plan, organize, prioritize and use their working memory effectively.  Then students become efficient and successful; their self esteem improves and their effort becomes more goal oriented. All students benefit from the strategies, and some children must have them.”

“The brain continues to mature and develop connections well into adulthood, and a person's executive function abilities are shaped by both physical changes in the brain and by life experiences, in the classroom and in the world at large. Early attention to developing efficient skills in this area can be very helpful, and as a rule, direct instruction, frequent reassurance and explicit feedback are strongly recommended.” (2008, National Center for Learning Disabilities, Inc.)
